Shooting of Gabrielle Giffords
Well, this is breaking news, and nothing is clear yet as to the motive behind it. But I thought it extrmely ironic that as I was sitting down to watch the movie for this week's discussion, my roommate told me to come in and watch the coverage in Tuscon, AZ, regarding the shooting of Congresswoman Gabbrielle Giffords. I did a little research, and I know this doesn't necessarily have to deal with the readings that we're doing this week, but she is a moderate in a district VERY close to the Mexican border and initial thoughts are that the shooter was a right-wing extremist. Just goes to say that these issues that we're talking about safely in our classroom in Evanston are the same issues that people are dying over in Arizona in broad daylight.

Like you said, nobody knows the motive behind the shooter's actions. But I've read that Giffords is a proponent of solid border security but is not supportive of strong illegal immigrant measures. While I'm sure there are citizens who appreciate this stance, picket signs within her district (which read "Giffords Opposes SB1070" - strong anti-immigration measure) suggest there are still others who bitterly protest her views, which could be seen as too lax. Whether or not the shooter's motive was based on immigration law and border patrolling, this day gives us a little insight as to how tense life on and around the border can be. And you're right, it's strange that we have the privilege of discussing horrific events like this from the safety of our classroom (or apartment, as it may be). It reminds me a little of the Caminata Nocturna...tourists satiating their worldly appetite by "living" the experience of the border. But still they truly have no idea of the danger and perils that actually exist.
